Manual Metal Arc Welding (ARC) - Intermediate (from $780 to $840 p/p)
Overview
This course covers the preparation, positioning, fixing, and manual welding techniques associated with general trade level welding using manual metal arc welding (MMAW) equipment including the selection and set up of the equipment appropriate to both the material and the weld to be performed, carrying out the MMAW to prescribed standards, and examining for and correcting defects, in a range of welded fabrications.
This course can be undertaken as:
- 4-day course from 8:00am to 4:30pm each day $780 (GST exempt) p/p; or
- 12 consecutive Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm to 8:00pm $840 (GST exempt) p/p
Course Content
The course applies to welds associated with heavy or light metal fabrications. Welds are fillet and butt welds in all positions on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials that may include carbon steel or stainless steel. Weld quality would conform to Australian Standard 1554 General Purpose, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) or equivalent. The course covers:
- Prepare materials for manual metal arc welding (MMAW)
- Select welding equipment and consumables
- Assemble and set up welding equipment
- Minimise and rectify distortion
- Weld to job specification using MMAW
- Ensure weld conformance
- Where required, maintain weld records
Course Pre-requisites
Pre-requisites for entry into this course are:
- MEM05012C - Perform routine manual metal arc welding
- MEM05051A - Select welding processes
- MEM05052A - Apply safe welding practices
- MEM12023A - Perform engineering measurements
- MEM18001C - Use hand tools
- MEM18002B - Use power tools/hand held operations
Note: If you do not have the above pre-requisites you may still undertake this course however upon successful completion you will be issued with a Statement of Attendance, this is NOT nationally recognised. RPL assessments are available if you wish to be assessed against the pre-requisites and additional fees will apply.
Successful Completion
Students who hold the pre-requisites and successfully complete all the requirements of this course will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

Intermediate Manual Metal Arc Welding
- Safety boots
- Non-tinted safety glasses
- Welding helmet
- Gauntlet gloves
- Long pants and a long sleeved shirt (for WHS reasons please do not wear excessively loose clothing)
- Safety glasses, basic welding helmet and gauntlet gloves can be purchased from reception (Please enquire at time of booking)
