MEM05019D - Weld using gas tungsten arc welding process

This course covers the preparation, positioning, fixing and welding techniques associated with general trade level welding using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) equipment including the selection and set up of the equipment appropriate to both the material and the weld to be performed, carrying out GTAW to prescribed standards, and examining for and correcting defects, in a range of welded fabrications.

Course Duration
This course can be undertaken as:

  • 4-day course from 8:00am to 4:30pm each day $780 (GST exempt) p/p; or
  • 12 consecutive Wednesday evenings from 5:00pm to 8:00pm $840 (GST exempt) p/p

Course Content
This course applies to welds associated with heavy or light metal fabrications. Welds are fillet and butt welds in all positions on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials that may include carbon steel or stainless steel and aluminium. Weld quality would conform to Australian Standard 1554 General Purpose, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), or equivalent.  The course covers:

  • Preparing materials for gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)
  • Selecting welding equipment and consumables
  • Assembling and set up welding equipment
  • Minimising and rectify distortion
  • Welding to job specifications using GTAW
  • Ensuring weld conformance
  • Maintaining weld records as required

Course Pre-requisites
The Pre-requisites are as follows:

  • MEM05049B - Perform routine gas tungsten arc welding
  • MEM05051A - Select welding processes
  • MEM05052A - Apply safe welding practices
  • MEM12023A - Perform engineering measurements
  • MEM18001C - Use hand tools
  • MEM18002B - Use power tools/hand held operations

Note: If you do not have the above pre-requisites you may still undertake this course however upon successful completion you will be issued with a Statement of Attendance, this is NOT nationally recognised. RPL assessments are available if you wish to be assessed against the pre-requisites and additional fees will apply.

Successful Completion
Students who hold the pre-requisites and successfully complete all the requirements of this course will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for:

  • MEM05019D - Weld using gas tungsten arc welding process

Students who do not hold the pre-requisites and successfully complete all the requirements of this course will be issued with a Statement of Attendance for:

  • Intermediate Tungsten Arc Welding

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to be supplied by participant

  • Safety boots
  • Non-tinted safety glasses
  • Welding helmet
  • TIG gloves
  • Long pants and a long sleeved shirt (for WHS reasons please do not wear excessively loose clothing)
  • Safety glasses, basic welding helmet and TIG gloves can be purchased from reception (Please enquire at time of booking)
